Review of the drama "Stringer" (Nightcrawler)

The film "Stringer" is the directorial debut of Dan Gilroy, Tony Gilroy's younger brother ("The Bourne Ultimatum", "Michael Clayton"). Before that, Dan wrote screenplays for films (The Fall, Real Steel, etc.), including his brother's film "The Bourne Legacy". After gaining experience, he decided that he could direct his own film.

"Stringer", by the way, is not an entirely adequate translation of the film, because Nightcrawler translates from the original as "Night Hunter". They also offered one translation option - "Vulture", which is also not bad.

I must say that "Stringer" was shot, as it is fashionable to say today, quite atmospheric. The gloomy, lingering mood, car racing, the night streets of Los Angeles, the chronicles of incidents - there is something attractive about this. In this regard, "Stringer" is somewhat similar to the film "Drive" by Nicolas Winding Refn - it also had its own style, atmosphere, the main character without a past, etc. Well, another "Taxi driver" Martin Scorsese comes to mind - there are also certain analogies.

At the same time, in "Stringer" Dan Gilroy raises several questions: the immorality of actions, the dirty work of the media, which receive ratings from accidents and crimes - the bloodier and more brutal the crime, the more they pay for this "material", the more it raises the rating of the channel And the owners of these channels, of course, don't care about all these unfortunate victims, they're just doing their job.

The current and controversial issue of greed is also touched upon. The main character has a goal, a goal that he, being obsessed with his work, achieves. The only question here is at what price he does it. The director of the film, Dan Gilroy (he is also the author of the script), leaves us food for thought, and everyone draws their own conclusions.

The jewel of the film is undoubtedly Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake showed the perfect contrast of his character. On the one hand, he is submissive and friendly to potential clients, and on the other, he is mentally charged and obsessed with his work. Gyllenhaal's acting is admirable.

Plus, there's a devilish aura around his Louis. The handsome appearance hides the dark side of the main character. I can almost believe that if not the devil, then some kind of cunning and crafty little devil lives in Louis' soul. Watch him smash the mirror in one of the movie scenes.

Gyllenhaal knows how to play with a spark in his eyes, and in such a way that you can believe in his madness without the slightest doubt. In Donnie Darko, he also played his character very convincingly, who believes in the end of the world. Well, I must say that Gyllenhaal is a versatile actor and his characters are very bright, different and interesting in their own way.

Riz Ahmed (Omar from the movie "Four Lions"), who played Louis' partner, also deserves kind words. A young, scared and uncouth guy at the beginning, but then, having gained experience, having learned how to talk and bargain from Louis, we see a completely different type of guy who begins to feel his weight, ask questions, demand a higher salary, etc.

It is clear that Ahmed is in the shadow of Gyllenhaal throughout the film (he has such a role in the plot), but in some moments he showed himself very well and even came to the fore a little in one episode.

Rene Russo was not so convincing in the role of Nina. Russo is the wife of the film's director, so it's understandable what kind of wind brought her here. I actually think she's such an actress, and then there's her fascination with the main character, played by Gyllenhaal.

Well, I don't know, considering her age (61 years old), wrinkles (no matter how they were buried, it's clearly visible), a face pumped up with botox. The fact that Louis Bloom is so fascinated and absorbed by her has been believed for about the 58th time, that is, it is not believed at all. It would have been possible to invite some young actress to play Nina, but Gilroy, apparently, did not want to do this.

To summarize. It's a good movie. Original, unconventional and atmospheric. Great performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, good production, I only lower my rating for the casting of Rene Russo, a good plot that makes you think about some interesting things. Can I recommend this movie to everyone? No, not all of them. Art-house cinema is clearly not for a mass audience. But it's a good art house.
